ASIAN AND ETHNIC PEOPLES PUBLIC HEALTH AWARD 2025:
ASIAN FAMILY SERVICES - EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES THROUGH CONNECTION AND ADVOCACY
The Public Health Association of New Zealand is honoured to recognise Asian Family Services (AFS) with the 2025 Asian and Ethnic Peoples Public Health Award, celebrating nearly three decades of dedicated service to the wellbeing of Asian communities across Aotearoa.
Founded on the belief that culturally responsive care saves lives, AFS has become a cornerstone of support for thousands of individuals and families. Over the past year alone, their multilingual health promotion and gambling-harm-reduction initiatives have reached tens of thousands—reducing stigma, encouraging help-seeking, and promoting mental wellbeing in communities often underserved by mainstream health systems.
Beyond frontline services, AFS has been a leading voice for structural change—contributing to national reforms, hosting the Asian Mental Health Summit, and driving policy conversations that recognise the unique needs and strengths of Asian communities. Their advocacy ensures that inclusion, equity, and cultural competence are at the heart of public health in Aotearoa.
Grounded in lived experience and powered by a spirit of service, Asian Family Services embodies the public health values of compassion, innovation, and community empowerment. PHANZ proudly acknowledges their enduring contribution to equity and wellbeing.
