PACIFIC PUBLIC HEALTH AWARD 2025:
DAVE LETELE - TRANSFORMING HEALTH, ONE AIGA AT A TIME
The Public Health Association of New Zealand is delighted to honour Dave Letele with the 2025 Pacific Public Health Award, recognising his inspirational leadership and transformative impact on Pasifika health and wellbeing.
Through his movement Buttabean Motivation (BBM), Dave has created a kaupapa rooted in the belief that “strong aiga, strong community.” His programmes provide culturally safe spaces for Pacific families to connect, exercise, share kai, and rebuild confidence—addressing the social and economic barriers that underpin health inequities.
From health and fitness training to food distribution, coaching, and crisis response, Dave’s mahi embodies equity in action. His initiatives have helped thousands of Pasifika people prevent or manage long-term conditions, reconnect with their culture, and strengthen their communities. By mentoring Pacific coaches and advocating for systemic change, Dave ensures that this impact is both grassroots and enduring.
PHANZ recognises Dave Letele as a true Pacific health champion—an advocate, leader, and role model whose compassion and commitment uplift aiga across Tāmaki Makaurau and Aotearoa. His work demonstrates how community leadership can transform lives and shape a healthier, more equitable future for all.
