Member Branches

The Public Health Association of New Zealand (PHANZ) is the professional organisation for public health practitioners and researchers in New Zealand.

The PHANZ has several regional branches that serve as a support network and ‘voice’ for the region. These branches help connect public health professionals across the country, facilitate networking and organise regional events and activities.

Historically the PHANZ has supported the following regional branches:

Active Branches

  • AUT Branch

    The AUT branch is made up of AUT employees and those who continue to associate to the institution.

    The AUT branch focusses on local public health issues and challenges unique to Auckland and across the motu.

  • Wellington Branch

    The Wellington branch is made up of PHANZ members from across Wellington, Wairarapa and nearby areas.

    The Wellington branch focusses on local public health issues and challenges unique to these areas and across the motu.

  • Canterbury & West Coast Branch

    The Canterbury & West Coast branch have joined forces and operate as a single branch.

    The Canterbury & West Coast branch focusses on local public health issues and challenges unique to these areas and across the motu.

Inactive Branches

  • Te Tai Tokerau Branch

    The Te Tai Tokerau branch typically covers North-Auckland and Northland regions.

    The Te Tai Tokerau branch is not currently active.

  • Auckland Branch

    The Auckland branch typically covers Auckland and surrounding areas.

  • Waikato Branch

    The Waikato branch encompasses the wider Waikato District including Hamilton City, Thames Coromandel, Waipa, Waitomo and South Waikato.

    The Waikato branch is not currently active.

  • Central Districts Branch

    The Central Districts branch stretches from the North Taranaki Bight, across to Ruapehu, south to Otaki in the west and across to the Tararua ranges in the east.

  • Bay of Plenty Branch

    The Bay of Plenty branch stretches from Pōtikirua in the east to Waihī beach in the west and includes Tauranga, Rotorua and Whakatāne.

    The Bay of Plenty branch is not currently active.

  • Tairāwhiti Branch

    The Tairāwhiti branch encompasses the region north of Wairoa, up to Hicks Bay and out west across to Matawai.

  • Hawke’s Bay Branch

    The Hawke’s Bay branch covers Wairoa, Napier, Hastings, Waipukurau and surrounding areas.

    The Upper South Island branch covers the Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough districts.

    The Otago-Southland branch covers the Otago and Southland regions.

    The Overseas branch includes public health professionals, researchers and students who are based outside Aotearoa New Zealand.

There may be other branches representing smaller regions or specific groups within the field of public health. This is dependent on the geographical and demographic distribution of public health professionals.
