PHANZ CEO ATTENDS UN BUSINESS & HUMAN RIGHTS FORUM FOR ANZ
The Public Health Association of New Zealand (PHANZ) Chief Executive, Dr Cadence Kaumoana, was invited to participate in the UN Business & Human Rights Forum for Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific held in Melbourne, Australia from 26-27 August.
Dr Kaumoana’s participation focused on PHANZ’s commitment to embedding health equity and human rights into development, business policy, and regional cooperation. At the Forum she engaged with a diverse range government officials, civil society, Indigenous representatives, academics and other corporate actors, advocating for public health perspectives, Te Tiriti-anchored approaches, and community-centred accountability.
“Human rights and public health cannot be separated,” Dr Kaumoana said. “Our people deserve equitable access to safe environments, services, and opportunities. It is essential that business and development are aligned with the wellbeing of communities, especially those who have been marginalised.”
There is much more we can learn and apply from these conversations. PHANZ will continue to stay connected with regional and international partners to strengthen support for our workforce, sector, and communities. We look forward to leveraging the connections and insights gained at the Forum to further advocacy, partnerships, and action that link health, equity, and rights across Aotearoa and the Pacific.
