WHY COMMUNITY WATER FLUORIDATION MATTERS IN CLINICAL PRACTICE: PHANZ WELCOMES NEW ZEALAND DENTAL JOURNAL PUBLICATION

The PHANZ is pleased to share the publication of a new article in the New Zealand Dental Journal (NZDJ), “Why community water fluoridation matters in clinical practice: Evidence from the Public Health Association of New Zealand’s new policy statement.”

The article, authored by Heuiwon (Chris) Han, translates the PHANZ’s recent policy position statement into practical insights for oral health professionals, reinforcing the critical role community water fluoridation plays in improving population health and reducing inequities in oral disease. Drawing on robust national and international evidence, it outlines how fluoridation remains one of the most effective, safe, and equitable public health interventions available.

Importantly, the article connects public health policy with day-to-day clinical practice. It supports dental and wider health professionals to confidently communicate the benefits of fluoridation to patients and communities, particularly in the face of ongoing misinformation. The article emphasises that clinicians are trusted voices and key advocates for evidence-based prevention.

The PHANZ’s policy position statement, which underpins the article, calls for sustained and expanded access to community water fluoridation across Aotearoa New Zealand. It highlights the disproportionate burden of dental caries experienced by children, Māori, Pacific peoples, and those living in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities and the role fluoridation plays in addressing these inequities.

By bringing together policy and practice, this NZDJ publication strengthens the case for a unified, evidence-informed approach to oral health promotion.
