PUBLIC HEALTH CHAMPION AWARD 2025:

GUYON ESPINER - FEARLESS VOICE FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD

The Public Health Association of New Zealand (PHANZ) is proud to name Guyon Espiner as the recipient of the 2025 Public Health Champion Award, recognising his fearless, persistent journalism that has transformed national conversations about the commercial determinants of health.

Through landmark work such as the Smoke and Mirrors series and the documentary Proof, Guyon has exposed how alcohol and tobacco industries influence public health policy in Aotearoa New Zealand. His reporting has illuminated how corporate power shapes public wellbeing, particularly for vulnerable communities.

Beyond his investigations, Guyon has led by example. By openly sharing his own experiences, he has deepened public understanding and normalised open dialogue about addiction, influence, and accountability. His work has challenged cultural norms, empowered communities, and strengthened advocacy for evidence-based health policy.

PHANZ celebrates Guyon for his courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to equity, social justice, and the public good. His voice continues to inspire change across Aotearoa and embodies the very essence of a Public Health Champion.
