PHA Conference scholarships 2010

Head Office scholarships

The PHA Head Office is pleased to announce scholarships for four people to attend the Public Health Association 2010 Conference, Tomorrow for tomorrow’s people - He ao mo nga whakatupuranga o apopo, 22-24 September 2010, Turangawaewae Marae, Ngaruawahia, Waikato.

The scholarships are available to all regions and will pay:

  1. full registration to conference (click here for registration forms)
  2. marae accommodation (including conference dinner)
  3. lowest economy return airfare or other (e.g. travelling by car or train), whichever is the lower amount
  4. one year's membership (2010-11) to the PHA.

Successful applicants will be required to attend at least 80 percent of the conference and provide a report.

How to apply

There is no application form. Please:

  1. write no more than one page on how you meet the criteria below including your experience, qualifications (formal or other), and role in the community group with whom you work/volunteer
  2. include information about the work your community group does (e.g. promotional brochure or group’s information sheet)
  3. include information confirming support from your community group, (e.g. confirmation of paid time off to attend the conference, also confirmation that there is no access to other funding support.

Selection criteria

The following criteria will be considered when looking at applications:

  • Do you work (paid or as a volunteer) for a community group actively involved in improving the health of the community, the health of Māori, and/or Pacific Island peoples?
  • How will your community group and community as a whole will benefit by you attending conference?
  • How will attending this conference help you in your training and development in public health?
  • What other funding is available to support your skill development (from you employer, other funders)
  • What other scholarships or grants have you had in previous years?

Where more applications are received than there are funds available, two other criteria will also be considered:

  • Have you had a paper accepted for presentation?
  • Are you a member of the PHA?

PHA Waikato Branch scholarships

The Waikato Branch of the PHA, which is hosting this year’s conference, is offering scholarships to those working or studying public health and/or community development from the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Lakes and Taranaki regions.

The scholarships include full conference registration, including attendance at all conference sessions, welcome and conference dinner, valued at $470. Also included is one year’s membership to the PHA. The value of this is up to $130. Applications close 9 July.

Waikato Tainui scholarships

Waikato Tainui is pleased to support the Public Health Association Annual Conference 2010 by offering five scholarships. This year the conference is being held at Turangawaewae Marae with Darrin Haimona as Master of Ceremonies. Keynote speakers include Dr Camara Jones (Atlanta USA), Shelley Campbell, Tame Pokaia, Dr Manuka Henare.

The scholarship packages will cover costs of the conference registration, accommodation at Turangawaewae Marae and a Public Health Association Membership for one year. Tribal members are invited to apply for a scholarship provided they meet the criteria below.

The intention of the scholarships is to provide funding for a student or unwaged delegate who otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend. All applicants must be registered tribal members of Waikato-Tainui.

You should have some involvement in at least one of the following options:

  • an intention to join the health workforce
  • a commitment to reducing inequalities in health for Maori including Waikato Tainui tribal members
  • active involvement in the dissemination of health information to Waikato Tainui tribal members
  • active involvement in the supporting Waikato Tainui tribal members to gain access to health services
  • support for positive health promotion, disease prevention for Waikato Tainui tribal members.
