Social Epidemiology

The University of Otago, Wellington 15th Public Health Summer School

How do factors such as ethnicity, education, employment, social deprivation, discrimination and social cohesion influence health? What methods can be used to improve our understanding of these complex relationships and reduce inequalities in health?

This three day course offers anyone concerned with understanding and reducing inequalities in health an overview of social epidemiology in both New Zealand and global contexts.

Cal for Abstracts

Agencies for Nutrition Action is now calling for abstracts.

The conference theme reflects the need to confront our practices around population nutrition and physical activity promotion so as to inform the approaches we take going into the future.

Promote your work and organisation as leaders in the area of public health nutrition and physical activity by submitting an abstract.

Innovative Partnerships for Action

The conference will explore the role of partnerships in creating the conditions in which people can lead flourishing lives. It will showcase innovative collective actions that support the maintenance and improvement of the health of populations. We are interested in how partnerships help us ‘do things differently’, how they ‘bridge divides’ in the broad field of public health, as well as how they are conceived, developed, implemented and sustained.

The Public Health Leadership Programme (PHLP)

PHLP is a residential leadership programme designed for public health leaders in New Zealand. The programme is funded by the Ministry of Health and has been developed following extensive consultation with the sector. PHLP builds leadership competencies identified as important for leaders in public health. The programme has been developed by Catapult (specialist leadership and organisational performance consultancy) and Quigley and Watts (public health specialists).

PHLP will allow participants to discover their leadership potential and equip them with practical and tested leadership tools and resources. The programme will generate immediate and lasting benefits for participants, those they lead, and for public health. PHLP has a six-day residential leadership component delivered as three two-day sessions.

In 2011 two programmes will be offered in Wellington and one in Auckland.

  • Wellington: July 4-5, Aug 29-30, Nov 1-2.
  • Wellington: Aug 8-9, Sept 6-7, Nov 7-8.
  • Auckland: Aug 2-3, Sept 13-14, Nov 10-11.

Applications close at 5pm Monday 21 February 2011. Note that applicants must demonstrate that they have their manager’s support to attend and to pay travel, food and accommodation expenses.
