Director of School of Public Health and Social Policy

The University of Victoria is seeking an experienced and dynamic leader as the inaugural Director for the new School of Public Health and Social Policy.

The University, recognized as one of Canada’s top comprehensive universities, serves more than 18,000 students, graduate and undergraduate, in a wide range of faculties. The Faculty of Human and Social Development includes the new School of Public Health and Social Policy as well as the Schools of Child and Youth Care, Health Information Science, Public Administration, Nursing, Social Work, and offers interdisciplinary graduate programs in Indigenous Governance, and Studies in Policy and Practice.

The School of Public Health and Social Policy will offer graduate programs leading to a Master of Public Health degree and a graduate Diploma in Public Health with areas of focus in Indigenous Peoples Health, Public Health Informatics, Public Health Nursing, and Social Policy. A Bachelor of Arts in Health and Community Services will also be offered. Building on the Faculty’s long standing commitment to providing accessible, flexible education, all programs in the School will be delivered online with strategically placed onsite components.

The Director of the School will have an excellent record of academic and administrative achievements in the field of public health. The School is strongly committed to human rights, social justice and community engagement, incorporating these values into the curriculum and program competencies of new graduate and undergraduate degrees. The School is seeking a leader who will guide the development of this new initiative and will foster the development of a research, education and public health practice agenda grounded in serving the population as a whole, but with particular emphasis on the vulnerable, adopting community-based methodologies to address public health concerns across the life-course and with particular relevance to Indigenous Peoples.

The Director serves as the head of the School’s leadership team, and manages departmental fiscal and human resources to foster excellence in education, research and service. The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate or equivalent with advanced preparation in public health, a well-developed research program and will be expected to continue scholarly and educational pursuits. The Director of the School reports to the Dean of the Faculty and represents the School within the University and in external contexts.

Health Promoter

ARPHS delivers public health services on behalf of the three district health boards in the Auckland region. ARPHS is a fully integrated public health unit delivering promotion, protection and screening programmes designed to improve the health and well-being of the populations of the Auckland region.

The Health Promoter will, in collaboration with the Programme Supervisors Health Promotion, plan, manage, co-ordinate and evaluate health promotion programmes: strategic and generic health promotion. The Health Promoter will also provide information that enables communities and individuals to develop strategies to improve health in relevant portfolio areas, and facilitate Māori, Pacific and Asian communities and general community participation in health promotion projects. Health Promotion positions are available across the following programmes: workplace health, alcohol and tobacco and early childhood centres.

In addition, the Health Promoter will:

  • actively assist in the development and design of health promotion programmes
  • assist in the evaluation of health promotion programmes
  • conduct and maintain ‘reflective practice’ as part of ongoing learning
  • provide leadership capabilities internally with the Health Promotion team and across ARPHS, as well as externally with DHBs, PHOs, and NGOs
  • implement initiatives in collaboration with key strategic partners using evidence-based health promotion strategies, including those which improve Māori and inequalities health status.

Qualified candidates must have:

  • a recognised discipline specific undergraduate +/- post graduate qualification(s) within the appropriate discipline that: enables New Zealand Registration or is recognised by a professional association for self-regulated professions or relevant and extensive community experience along with a firm commitment, plans and steps to attaining a tertiary education and/or relevant certification
  • a full (manual) and current driver’s licence
  • willingness to travel and work flexible hours if/as required
  • three or more years experience in health promotion/relevant discipline
  • relationship management skills with diverse internal and external stakeholders
  • proficiency in the use of the internet, web-based software and Microsoft Office software
  • proficiency in writing and presenting information
  • experience in working within the Treaty of Waitangi principles

Chief Executive

A rewarding and challenging leadership role

Arohanui Hospice provides care for people with life limiting illnesses and support for their families and whānau in the Manawatu, Tararua, Horowhenua and Rangitikei/Taihape regions.

The growth and evolution of Arohanui Hospice has been both spectacular and challenging. The appointment of this pivotal role is another step in creating one of the best palliative facilities in New Zealand.

Reporting directly to the Arohanui Hospice Service Trust the purpose of this role is to provide leadership and operational expertise in the delivery of the Arohanui Hospice strategic goals for both existing and new services. You will be responsible for ensuring that provision of health services is supported by robust financial management and that all statutory obligations and contract accountability expectations are continuously met. Your focus will include fostering a unique culture of commitment to existing quality policies and procedures whilst encouraging improvement through innovation. This is a complex service based organisation of 73 staff and 350 volunteers requiring you to bring together a range of functions to work collectively as an effective team. This role requires you to develop and maintain strategic relationships with key external stakeholders as well as establish a partnership approach with the Senior Leadership and Management Team.

To succeed you will demonstrate the capacity to interpret and communicate the strategic vision into operational objectives and combine this with the ability to make things happen.

Ideally you will have a clinical background and extensive working knowledge of the health sector. Proven leadership ability with a track record of successful management at both a strategic and operational level combined with appropriate financial management experience is desired. The ability to develop and grow strong and successful relationships both internally and externally is critical as is effective decision making, negotiation and presentation skills. An appropriate tertiary qualification is essential. Naturally you will have a passion and commitment to the mission, vision and values of the Arohanui Hospice.
